Hi all!

Thanks for contributing to another great session of SURG broadcasts! We had lots of new talent this year and are looking forward to seeing everyone again next semester when we broadcast during VERGE.

We’ll try to organise a bar event for everyone to get together, drink, reminisce and tell tall tales. This will happen before the end of semester, so stay tuned :)

all my lust,

Michael Koziol

President

Hey all,

A few things:

1) Schedule is now finalized, so please take note of where you are and make sure to be in the studio on time

2) Our broadcasting licence has been extended by a week to make up for missing O-Week. That means that there will be two more weeks of broadcasting after this week, and we will finish up on Friday 20th.

3) A big thanks to Mark Gurd from Fresh Noise Productions for creating all our new stings this year! Mark produces at Nova 96.9 and voluntarily put these together for us, and they are fantastic! Check out the website at:

www.freshnoise.com.au

Mark can be contacted at: mark.gurd@bigpond.com if you have any questions about radio production, his own work, etc

thanks, and remember to stay tuned to 90.9!

Hello and thanks for visiting SURG!

Let’s start off with the bad news. Not that there is much good news, but it gets progressively better.

SURG FM will NOT be broadcasting on 90.9 through O-Week. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the transmitter won’t be installed until Monday Week 1 (2nd March). We anticipate full, normal broadcasting will begin on that day. We have inquired to see if the license can be extended by a week to make up for this loss.

REMEMBER - we are still at O-Week! The SURG stall is on the front lawns, and you NEED to come register for membership this year. You can pick up a lovely bright orange t-shirt while you’re there.

ALSO - everyone needs to come to the Training and Defamation Briefing on Monday at 6pm in the Isabel Fidler room at Manning (top floor). This will give you the chance to play with the equipment, learn about the pitfalls of racism, and register a timeslot for your show. BE THERE!

with sympathy,

Michael Koziol

Dear Members,

Yesterday evening, SURG’s AGM was held, at which a new board of directors was elected.

The results are in … drumroll, please!

President: Michael Koziol
Vice President: Max Halden
Public Relations Officer: Arghya Gupta
Secretary: Bishara Marzook
Treasurer: Josh Wyndham-Kidd

Congratulations to the new team, I look forward to seeing where you take SURG over the coming months.

I would also like to extend to the outgoing team a message of thanks and congratulations. Working with you this last year has been a fantastic bit of fun! Furthermore, making radio with all of SURG’s members over the last two years that I’ve been on the board has been really fun and rewarding. Thank you all.

Hey hey radio babes,

As promised the ever popular Media Industry Night (famed in song and story) is upon us lucky few once more this Monday night coming, thanks to the great efforts of we here on the executive of your beloved university station, as well as the media and communications society of course. (You may kiss our various rings later.)

The Media Industry Night is an opportunity for any of you interested in working in media or journalism to rub shoulders with people who’ve spent their lives doing just that….and of course, never let it be said that we forgot to cater to those of you who just enjoy a good Monday evening bar tab.

The guests this year will include:

Ray Martin (and assorted entourage….I’m as intrigued as you are…)
Tim Ritchie (formerly of triple j and currently of Radio National’s new music program Sound Quality)
Wendy Carlisle (also of Radio National but from their background news program)
James O’Brian (from 702, producer for Adam Spencer)
Alyx Gorman (print journalist for fashion mag Oyster and student here at the uni)
ideally some people from FBi and Nova as well, though final word is yet to arrive
and every hope of others besides

They’ll all have name tags and there’ll be an announcenment on the night so you’ll know who’s who.

There will be food and, much more to the point, a substantial bar tab, so come early and bring your friends to take full advantage.
There will be a table set up near the door (we’ll make ourselves obvious) so come there to get your tickets and stamps for drinks when you arrive.

What: SURG and MECOSOC Media Industry Night
Where: Hermann’s Bar, bottom level Wentworth
When: Monday the 27th of October from 7pm
How Much: $2 for members with access cards, $3 for non-members with access, $4 all other students and $5 general public

So turn out to enjoy a night of booze and schmooze with your radio family.
(Oh and it’s not an rsvp event, but any of you who do think you’ll be coming who want to drop me a line to let me know (at anniem@surgfm.org), would be much loved for your efforts toward my continuing sanity. Always helpful for these things to have a rough idea what the turn out will be.)

Hope to see you there!

(oh, and on another note: don’t forget, Monday the 27th is pink ribbon day (for breast cancer research), so be colour supportive if you’re so inclined. Remember boys it’s the one day of the year when you can wear pink and still make it clear that it’s breasts you like :) )

Love and Kisses

SURG will be having its Annual General Meeting at the end of October. We haven’t got a firm date yet, but it will be sometime during the last week of October. We will also advise on a venue as soon as we know for sure.

The Annual General Meeting is a requirement of the USU and involves the reporting to members of the group’s activities over the last 12 months, and perhaps most importantly it involves the election of the new executive. All of the current executives are ‘retiring’, so to speak, from SURG and will not be seeking re-election. Therefore, the AGM is your opportunity to become involved in a fresh team to take SURG into 2009.

The USU clubs and societies programme is recognised and respected by employers as great professional experience, so it looks great on your resume`. More importantly, being a club executive gives you an opportunity to work closely with the USU to help create the vibrant and exciting campus experience we all enjoy.

The SURG team is comprised of

President
Vice President
Treasurer
Public Relations Officer
Secretary

SURG being the sort of group that it is, all of these positions have some overlap and, fundamentally, all positions are involved in radio broadcasting and production, so if you’re interested in the industry then a position on the SURG board will give you invaluable experience, regardless of the actual position.

The only requirements for nomination/election are that you be an Access Card holder and a USyd student.

If you are interested in nominating yourself, or a fellow member, please send an email to info@surgfm.org with the following info:

Nominee:
Position:
Name of memer submitting nomination:
ACCESS card number:
Student ID:
Email:
Mobile Phone #:

All nominations must be received via email or phone at least 3 days before the AGM.

We will be in touch with info on date/time/venue shortly.

At Wednesday’s Clubs and Socs awards night, held at Manning Bar, SURG won an award for best involvement in a USU event during 2008! We received this for the fantastic broadcasts we produced during O-Week and the first three weeks of Semester 1. We were winners in this category last year too!

Congratulations to all involved; we would not have won if it weren’t for the dedication and talent of our many members.

Hello all,

As is sometimes the case, our frequency has been changed by the ACMA. We will broadcasting throughout VERGE Arts festival on 107.9 — that’s right at the end, up near Janet Jackson and Vanessa Amorosi on MIX106.5. What awful company…

Also there are still some spare slots in the programme. Choose a slot if you haven’t already done so, or opt to do extra shows if you’re already down. I know of a bunch of dormant members who are yet to get in touch… Please, email us this week.

I’m sure more will come up in the next couple of days and weeks and we’ll be emailing about that. Also, I expect I’ll see most of you around, or you’ll be seeing Annie, Robbie and Nick too. Feel free to ask us any questions of for help. If we’re loitering around the studio it’s because we’ve got nothing better to do; use this to your advantage and ask us for help if you need it.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing you all.

Congratulations to everyone who made our first broadcast for 2008 a success. You’ve made some of the best shows I’ve heard on USUFM in three years!

Keep your ears to the ground for info on our industry night. Last year was a great night and we’ll have some more journos and DJs for you to pester and fawn over.

If you’re keen to get recordings of your show please email me with your timeslots and I will burn it onto CD for you and let you know how to pick it up.

Once again, on behalf of the SURG team, thank you for pulling together three weeks of fantastic student radio. All of us on the board look forward to catching up during the year and to our VERGE broadcasts in September.
Cheers,

SURG will be giving all new members training in the use of our studio equipment, as well as a brief and informative discussion about defamation and other legal issues with broadcasting. This is a chance for you to get to know your exec better, meet other SURG members to discuss your show plans and to hit the ground running when it comes to using the gear in the studio. There will be pizzas provided.
This workshop is compulsory for all new members who have a live timeslot. It is highly recommended for old SURG members to come along too as we’ll have some more new equipment for you to try out.

  • Where — Isobel Fidler Room, Level 2, Manning House
